The OIC summit attended by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 11, 2023, has had a significant impact in the efforts to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict.
In his speech, President Jokowi conveyed four important recommendations to the leaders of OIC member countries. Firstly, President Jokowi firmly urged Israel to immediately implement a ceasefire. He acknowledged that without a ceasefire, the situation in Gaza will not improve.
“Israel, under the narrative of ‘self-defense,’ has committed killings against innocent civilians. This form of collective punishment is inhumane. Therefore, all parties must work together to find a solution and urge Israel to implement a ceasefire,” President Jokowidodo stated.
Secondly, President Jokowi requested for humanitarian aid to be swiftly delivered to Gaza. He also emphasized the importance of Israel respecting international law in handling this conflict. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is deeply concerning. For example, the Indonesian Hospital in Northern Gaza continues to be targeted by Israeli attacks and is running out of fuel supplies. Indonesia expects all parties to respect international humanitarian law.
Thirdly, President Jokowi urged the OIC to utilize all available channels to demand accountability from Israel for the committed humanitarian atrocities. He stressed the importance of granting full access to the Independent International Commission of Inquiry On The Occupied Palestinian Territory, established by the UN Human Rights Council, in order to fulfill its tasks effectively. President Jokowi also highlighted the significance of supporting the legal process at the International Court of Justice.
The fourth recommendation presented by President Jokowi addressed the need to initiate peace negotiations as soon as possible. Indonesia is ready to play an active role in these negotiations. If the current quartet mechanism is no longer effective, the OIC should champion a new format for the peace negotiation process. Indonesia is prepared to make a significant contribution to these negotiations.
Additionally, President Jokowi confirmed that he will soon meet with President Joe Biden of the United States. The purpose of this meeting is to convey the outcomes of the OIC summit and discuss the resolution of the Gaza conflict. In the near future, President Jokowi will undertake a bilateral visit to the United States and respectfully report the decisions made at the OIC summit to President Biden.
President Jokowi reaffirmed his commitment and support towards resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict. Through the OIC forum, he has provided important and influential recommendations in finding a solution for both parties. President Jokowi will also continue diplomatic efforts by meeting with President Joe Biden to discuss the resolution of the Gaza conflict.
As a leader of an OIC member country, President Jokowi hopes that a peaceful solution can be achieved promptly to end the suffering of the Palestinian people and create security in the region. (Red)
